Pehredaar Piya Ki is making a comeback on television.

It hasn’t been long that Sony TV’s Pehredaar Piya Ki was caught in a web of controversies. And now indianexpress.com has information that the makers have already planned its next season. While Tejasswi Prakash, the original female lead of the daily has been retained, Saathiya fame Rohit Suchanti has been finalised to play the hero in the new series. The actor shared, “I had auditioned for the role but haven’t yet got any confirmation yet.”

Earlier there were reports of Shantanu Maheshwari bagging the prized role but sources close to the show told us that Rohit will get to romance Tejasswi. Rohit, who made his TV debut with MTV Warrior High was last seen as the lead of Saath Nibhana Saathiya. The actor is said to sign the contract soon and the show will go on floors in a couple of days.

The storyline of Pehredaar Piya Ki 2 will focus on the young Ratan coming back from a foreign university all grown up and how the marriage will affect his and Diya’s lives. Tejasswi will now play a 30-year-old woman while Rohit’s character will be in his twenties. It would be interesting to see how the audience accepts this older woman-younger man relationship on TV.

A source close to the show added, “Rohit fits the bill of a young boy, who looks like he has returned from abroad and yet has a royal regal persona. Both the leads will have a very grand look, while Tejasswi will don traditional attires, Rohit’s character will have a modern chic avatar.”

Going back to the controversy, Pehredaar Piya Ki that depicted the marriage between an 18-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, had left the audience aghast. Stating it to be against societal norms, a petition was filed against it demanding a ban. The Broadcasting Content Complaints Council had taken a swift action and asked the show to shift to a later slot. It also asked the channel to run a scroll saying that the show nowhere promotes child marriage. But the audience was not satisfied and with constant pressure on the I & B Minister Smriti Irani, she reportedly asked the channel to pull the plug.

With the show going off air abruptly, Sony TV issued an official media statement that said, “Effective 28th August 2017, we are pulling off our programme, Pehredaar Piye Ki, from television. While we understand that the decision to end this serial will be disappointing to those whose creative energies are vested in it, namely, its crew and cast, we (as a channel) are convinced that we will be better served by focusing instead on developing viewer interest in our upcoming, new shows. We are grateful to all the artists, producers and fans of our shows and request you to graciously support the viewership of our newer ventures.”

Producer of the show Sumeet Mittal in an exclusive conversation with indianexpress.com mentioned that they amicably decided to end the show as the late timeslot did not do justice to its content. He had also assured that he will get back with a new show with the same team. “We will focus on the positivity and focus our energies on bringing another show soon. We work for the audience and that’s how it will always be.”
