Delhi Police Women’s Wing: A Troop Of Warriors

With the increasing crime rate against women in Delhi, the dearth of a specialised wing for women safety and security was needed, and thus the Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC) was born. The special police unit is a part of Delhi Police that aims to safeguard the rights of women and children in the New Delhi.

The unit specialises in complaints and investigation in cases related to dowry and other crimes against women. It also handles cases related to children. This has been achieved by building a trained team of child-friendly police and police stations across the city. The Juvenile Justice model is based on the assumption that children are too vulnerable and immature to pre-empt the repercussions of their impulsive actions. The SPIWAC is now located across all 13 districts of Delhi.

Keeping the pace of women in forces, this Independence Day saw 41 women commandos were flown in from Northeast to guard the Red Fort and India Gate. There were intelligence inputs of women Fidayeen planning to target the capital on August 15. The notable part of the entire move was the Grade-A equipment brought by them. Each commando was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, or an MP5 submachine gun, a Glock 17 or Glock 26 pistol, hand grenades, a wireless set, a 20-metre nylon rope, a pencil torch, a bulletproof helmet, bulletproof jacket, flame torch, cutter and a commando dagger. Knee and elbow pads are also worn for protection.

Similar types of equipment are used by Delhi Police Swat team to protect the people of Delhi in the hour of need.
