To meet parents too, submit report

The Kerala State Women’s Commission (KSWC) will approach the Supreme Court seeking permission to meet Hadiya, whose conversion to Islam and marriage to a Muslim had run into legal issues.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Sunday, KSWC chairperson M.C. Josephine said the decision was taken in the wake of discussions about the human rights issues involved.

The panel had also received several representations in this regard.

The commission would like to meet the parents of the girl and submit a report to the apex court, she said.

The commission can meet the woman as the panel was set up for the welfare of women. Since the Supreme Court was considering the case, the panel felt it appropriate to obtain the permission of the highest court before meeting her. The panel had also received legal opinion in this regard, said Ms. Josephine.

Do not escalate tension

On reports appearing in some sections of the media, including social media, that the commission was playing into the hands of some interest groups, Ms. Josephine said the panel would uphold its pro-women stance.

Care should be taken not to escalate social rift and tension and all should cooperate with the panel in this regard, Ms. Josephine said.
