
The meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Xiamen on September 5 has set new hopes for the Sino-India relationship which was stained by the Doklam standoff, the Chinese Consul General Ma Zhanwu said on Saturday in Kolkata, according to a report by The Indian Express. He added that China and India are working together to “take forward” their relationship leaving behind he Dokalam episode. Zhanwu also spoke about resumed initiatives in West Bengal and East India after the Dokalam standoff toned down at the borders, the report added. Chinese Consul General Ma Zhanwu also asserted that by working together, cooperation and exchanges can be further enhanced.
Zhanwu while addressing a meeting to mark the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic said that the titular heads of both the countries during their meeting on September 5th discussed how the relationship between the countries can be enhanced. “India and China are working together. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping had a meeting on September 5 to discuss how to enhance the relationship,” Zhanwu said. When Zhanwu was asked whether both the countries have left behind the Dokalam episode, he replied, “Yes we have left that behind and are working together to take forward the bilateral relationship”.
Zhanwu while speaking at the celebration announced a couple of initiatives targeting East India. He announced a competition to find the safest and most environment-friendly Durga Puja pandal in collaboration with Kolkata based NGO, Impact. Zhanwu further said that China and Eastern India hold huge potential for exchanges and cooperation. He also mentioned since the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949, China has witnessed a great progress in its relationship with other countries. Prime Minister Modi had met President Xi on the sidelines of the 9th BRICS Summit on September 5.
