With no further indications on Sunday on the timing of announcement of the ‘additional moves’, as stated by finance minister Arun Jaitley, to revive the economy, it’s being speculated that prime minister Narendra Modi could announce the stimulus at a function, being organised by the power ministry on Monday.
Power minister RK Singh had on Saturday said the prime minister would be launching the 24x7 electricity-for-all scheme on Monday.
Another factor that supported the speculation was that the event would also mark the birth anniversary of RSS ideologue Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.
Also given the penchant of the NDA-II government to make important announcement like demonetisation and surgical strikes on Pakistan in a manner to keep the masses guessing, say political pundits Modi may use the occasion to announce fiscal measures to stimulate the slowing economy.
The growth of Indian economy plummeted to a 3-year low of 5.7 per cent in the first quarter of FY18, ringing alarm bells in the corridors of power and political circles. If announced, the package could comprise Rs 50, 000 crore incentive for exporters, traders, micro, small and medium enterprises, infrastructure and manufacturing sectors to perk up demand and generate jobs.
On Monday, the prime minister will also formally inaugurate Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’ (ONGC) new corporate office that was renamed Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Urja Bhawan, from Rajiv Gandhi Urja Bhawan.
The swanky but green-building built at a cost of Rs 600 crore was completed a year ago and now houses corporate office of India's largest oil and gas producer and its overseas subsidiary ONGC Videsh.
ONGC had moved into the new office at Vasant Kunj last year and the statue was installed in the compound last week
