GUNTUR: Sleepless nights due to mosquito menace, hazardous walk on damaged roads and lack of basic amenities are haunting the people of Durga Nagar in Suddhapalli Donka Road in the city. It is also facing pig menace, which may result in the outbreak of diseases. The wild growth of vegetation in vacant sites in between houses is also a matter of concern as it may give scope for the presence of rodents and poisonous snakes. The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) which is more focused on collection of taxes from residents, has failed to improve basic amenities in the colony. Despite several representation to the GMC authorities no steps have been taken improve amenities, allege residents.

Yerramsetty Rambabu says though rearers are letting pigs into the residential colony posing a grave threat to children and giving scope for outbreak of diseases, the GMC authorities have failed to take any action against them.Sk Baig says no fogging is done in the colony to curb the mosquito menace. If fogging is done, it is limited to main roads only.Kotapati Sivaparvathi complains that the side drains in the colony are for name sake only. They are uneven and choked due to improper construction and poor layout. No steps have been taken to clear the choked drains though they have turned into mosquito breeding rounds. Overflowing of sewage water at some places is causing severe inconvenience to pedestrians. The stench emanating from the drains is unbearable. The GMC should take urgent measures to improve basic amenities in the colony, she adds.
