Virat Kohli's Indian team also won their sixth consecutive ODI bilateral series win, equalling the record with Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni.
India defeated Australia by five wickets in the third ODI at Indore to take a 3-0 unassailable lead in the five-match series.
With this win, India have now won their ninth game in a row under the astute captaincy of Virat Kohli. Kohli's Indian team equalled MS Dhoni's record as captain. MS Dhoni had achieved the feat from November 2008 till February 2009.
India also became the number one ranked team in the latest ICC ODI rankings with 120 points. They displaced South Africa, who are on 119 points, while Australia are third with 114 points. India are now the top ranked team in both ODIs and Tests.
The Indian team's, under Kohli, nine-match winning streak started with the fifth ODI victory against West Indies in Kingston where they won by eight wickets. After that they whitewashed Sri Lanka in the five-match series in Sri Lanka and then registered victories against Australia in Chennai, Kolkata and now Indore.
This is India's sixth consecutive ODI bilateral series win, starting with Zimbabwe in 2016. They beat Zimbabwe, New Zealand, England, West Indies,Sri Lanka and now Australia. Kohli's first series as full-time captain was the England series in January. The run equals the reigns of Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni as captain, who both won six consecutive series wins. Dravid did it between January 2007 and August 2007, while MS Dhoni achieved it between November 2007 and June 2009.
Overall, only former captain Ricky Ponting has registered an eight-match winning five times in one-day internationals. Kohli has 30 wins, 7 losses and 1 no result in the 38 ODIs he has led in. He is now equal with West Indian legends Clive Lloyd and Viv Richards.
He has been instrumental with the bat and led from the front in most of the matches. In these victories, the right-handed batsman scored 533 runs (111*, 82*, 4, 3, 131, 110*, 0, 92, 28) in the last nine games including three hundreds.
Rohit Sharma also registered his name in the record books with a blazing knock of 71.With four huge sixes in Indore, including a maximum hit of 103 metres, Rohit Sharma has now struck a total of 64 sixes against Australia across formats pipping McCullum's 61. Sachin Tendulkar is third on the list with 60 sixes.
The Holkar Stadium in Indore joined Eden Gardens, Kolkata in the second spot on the list of most successive ODI wins for India at a home venue. Both have five-match winning streak, Indore between 2006-2017 and Kolkata with 1991-94. Cuttack leads the list with six games between 2007 and 2017.
Australia lost the first three matches of a five-match ODI series on three occassions. They had lost to England in 2010 and then South Africa in 2015.
