The condition of former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who underwent a valve replacement surgery at a private hospital on Saturday, is stable.

A team of cardiac surgeons, led by Satyaki P. Nambala at Apollo Hospitals, Bannerghatta Road, conducted the three-and-a-half-hour surgery. He was admitted to the hospital on Saturday.

According to C.N. Manjunath, Director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, who is also his brother-in-law, Mr. Kumaraswamy underwent an aortic valve replacement. “This is an open heart surgery through a minimally invasive approach. His condition is stable and he will have to be in the ICU for two more days after which he will be shifted to the room,” said the doctor, who was also present during the surgery.

Dr. Nambala, a cardio thoracic and vascular surgeon, is said to be one of the leading authorities in the country in the treatment of heart, lung and vascular surgery, with expertise in complex valve repairs.

Mr. Kumaraswamy, who had undergone a valve replacement surgery in 2007, will be in hospital for at least eight days. “After that he will need rest for a minimum of two weeks,” Dr. Manjunath said.
