Rajiv Gandhi assasination case: Perarivalan gets 30 more days of leave

CHENNAI: A day ahead of his month-long leave was to end, the State government on Saturday issued orders for extending by 30 days the ‘ordinary leave’ for AG Perarivalan, one of the convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

After a gap of 26 years, Perarivalan reunited with his family members on August 26. The leave was given to him based on the repeated appeals from her mother Arputham Ammal to the State government. In this connection, she also met Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. Arputham Ammal cited the health condition of her husband and said Perarivalan’s presence in this crucial period would be a solace to them.

A couple of days ago, Arputham Ammal met the Chief Minister again and submitted a petition seeking extension of the ‘ordinary leave’ given to Perarivalan by 30 days. On Saturday, the government issued the necessary orders, which are expected to reach the authorities in Vellore prison where he was lodged, anytime.

Leaders of political parties have been urging the State government to release all the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case considering their long-time imprisonment. The late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa took efforts to release them in 2014.
