MCG election: Independents establish lead; voter turnout 55.68%

GURUGRAM: Independent candidates established lead in the Gurugram civic polls on Sunday even as results of 10 seats were confirmed with seven seats going to Independents. On Sunday, around 55.68% people voted in Gurugram to elect their next municipal mayor. Last time, i.e. in 2011, the poll percentage was 63.3%. This shows a decline of eight per cent. Notably, the mayor's seat is reserved for a scheduled caste female candidate.
This time, the independent candidates displayed a lead in the initial results. Out of 35 seats, the independents have a lead on 21 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading on 13 and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) is leading on one.
Among the leading candidates is Rimple Yadav, a BJP contestant from ward 5. She is the wife of former mayor Bimal Yadav.
The confirmed winners so far include:

Ward 3: Ravinder Yadav, BJP
Ward 8: Dinesh Saini, Independent
Ward 9: Pramila Kablana, Independent
Ward 10: Sheetal Bagri, Independent

Ward 25: Subhash Singh, BJP
Ward 26: Praveen Lata, Independent
Ward 27: Sudesh Rani, Independent
Notably, a total 202 candidates, including 78 women, contested in these elections. There are 147 independent candidates. While BJP had a candidate in every seat, INLD had 20 candidates and it is supporting 10 independent candidates too. Importantly, Congress did not announce any candidate, but is supporting 14 independent candidates.
