Alleged UIDAI staffer held for duping people

BENGALURU: HAL police have arrested a person who claims to be working with Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for allegedly duping at least 20 people by promising to get them residential sites under government schemes. He also threatened some of the victims that he would file atrocity cases against them if they demand their money back, a senior policemen said. Police added that he claimed to be an employee in UIDAI - South Division.

The accused is Rajkumar, a resident of Jayanagar 3rd Block. He would approach gullible middle class people at enrolment centres when they came to enrol for Aaadhar cards. He would talk to them about various government schemes and collect `20,000 to `1 lakh from each person. He also told them that he is an influential man and could easily get sites for them. Police said he has been conning people for the last one-and-a-half years and has pocketed at least `10 lakh.

Acting on a complaint filed by one of the victims, police nabbed Rajkumar. The complainant was Harish, a resident of Basavanagar, who approached HAL police to file a case against Rajkumar. A retired police officer is also one of his many victims.

“Rajkumar claims that he is a senior executive and trainer for UIDAI staffers but we are yet to ascertain his exact role in UIDAI. He also claimed that he was a legal advisor at a reputed insurance company before joining UIDAI,” the officer said.

During interrogation, Rajkumar told the police that his wife works for a political party and is leading SC Morcha, which is why he never thought that somebody would file a complaint against him. Police said that Rajkumar had also duped one Ramesh of `30,000. Ramesh and his wife Bharati recently died after a tree fell on their car in JC Road near Minerva Circle, following heavy rains.
