The Ludhiana police on Saturday claimed that the 30-year old man whose body was found abandoned in a car in Dugri area on September 17, died due to “drug overdose”. The police have also booked three of his friends who allegedly gave him an injection leading to his death.

The deceased’s mother, Baljit Kaur, had told police that her son Sandeep Singh was a drug and liquor addict and that they had admitted him to a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre but he failed to come out of the drug trap.

Addressing the media, Additional DCP Sandeep Garg said the police had earlier booked unidentified persons for murder. However, during the probe, it was found that four persons, including the deceased, were consuming drugs. His three friends now booked for culpable homicide have confessed that they injected a drug into the veins of the deceased, Garg said, adding that due to overdose, Singh fell unconscious and later they abandoned him in the locked car following which he died.

The accused have been identified as Bittu of Model Town, Umesh Paswan alias Gajni of Jawaddi Kalan and Ranjit Kumar alias Laalu of Pakhowal Road.

They have been booked under the sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC at Dugri police station. The section 302 of IPC (murder) has been removed from the FIR.

As per the mother of the deceased, Sandeep Singh had left home on September 16 but never returned. The next day, his body was recovered from the backseat of his car parked near his home.
