Mass marriages conducted at Janjagaran melawa in Gadchiroli
Soumitra Bose | TNN | Sep 23, 2017, 21:49 ISTNagpur: Mass marriages were organized at the 'Jan jagaran melawa' at Khedegaon within the limits of Purada police station in Gadchiroli district on Friday.
The melawa or gathering was held for the local tribal population of Khedegaon and its surrounding villages with the multi-purpose aims of dissemination of government projects and schemes along with competitions and cultural events. Police department, along with revenue and other government agencies, come together on a single podium to interact with the local population to hear their problems and also try address them. Several facilities and schemes of the governments are also made available to them.
Among other events, several couples from economically weaker families were made to tie knots at the function where villagers were also offered sumptuous meals. The newly-wed couples also received gifts from the police and other government officials to start their life. Monetary assistance were also offered to them.
Raela or local dance form competitions were also organized. Local women also participated in 'Rangoli' competitions. Volleyball tournaments were also held during the one-day event. The cops also distributed volleyballs, nets and other games among the youngsters.
