A 50-year-old gangster, who jumped furlough after being sentenced to life imprisonment, was arrested on Thursday for his alleged involvement in several cases of murder and attempt to murder.

Amrik Singh, a close aide of notorious Krishan Pehelwan gang, was apprehended from Rajasthan’s Bharatpur after the police received a tip-off. “A team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Sanjay Sehrawat was formed and the accused was apprehended from near Murli Cinema in Bharatpur,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Rajesh Deo.

According to the police, Amrik was booked in a murder case of Mangolpuri resident, Ved Prakash, in 1998 and was sentenced to life imprisonment. In March 2017, he was released on furlough for three weeks, but he never surrendered after the stipulated period. “While in jail, he got to know that his relatives and rivals were plotting against him. Therefore, during the furlough period, he threatened his cousin Rakesh Kumar to evacuate a property in Mangolpuri. A case was registered in the matter,” said Mr. Deo.

The police said that nabbing Amrik was a priority because he jumped furlough and also committed crime during the stipulated period. “To curb his illegal activities, he was also booked under the provisions of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act ( MCOCA),” said the DCP. Amrik, who had allegedly killed his niece and her husband, has 13 cases of murder, attempt to murder, Arms Act among others registered against him.
