Stephen King is called one of the best modern horror writers for a reason. Both commercially and critically, his books have been successful. He has also created some of the scariest monsters that could hide in your closet. His It, in the novel of the same name and alternatively called Pennywise the Dancing Clown, was recently seen in Andrés Muschietti’s film adaptation and the film received rave reviews. It is also doing exceptionally well at the box office. The last count puts the worldwide collection at over $400 million.

We have not yet recovered from Pennywise, and here comes another creepy Stephen King adaptation. A Netflix original, 1922 is based on the novella of the same name that was published in a collection called Full Dark, No Stars in 2010.

The year, as the title suggests, is 1922. Wilfred James is a farmer who loves what he does and also the life of hard toil that comes with it. His wife, though, has a different opinion. She wants to move to the city. Wilfred disagrees and she asks for a divorce. Sandwiched between them is their young son. James, in a foreboding but musing tone, says, “There is a man inside every man. A conniving man.” The father and son duo kill her and hide their body.

But then she comes back, as a ghost (obviously). And, with her come rats. Lots of them. If you don’t like rats, or rodents selectively, it is probably not a good idea to watch this film as even the trailer of this movie has large numbers of giant rodents bent on making the life of Wilfred James and his son difficult. The film will premiere on Netflix on October 20.
