CHENNAI: The ruling faction of the AIADMK on Friday urged the Election Commission to restore the ‘Two Leaves’ symbol and party name that were frozen on March 22 following rebellion within the party, and submitted the resolutions adopted at the September 12 general council meeting when the factions led by Chief Minister Edapaddi K Palaniswami and present Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam merged.
The resolutions also include the one that cancelled VK Sasikala’s appointement as the general secretary of the party. The factions have informed the commission that the affidavits they had filed in the past stood withdrawn. The petition signed by party coordinator Panneerselvam and joint coordinator Palaniswami was handed over by ministers D Jayakumar, CV Shanmugam and RB Udhayakumar, and KP Munusamy and Manoj Pandian. Along with the resolutions adopted at the GC meet, they also submitted a register of members of general council with their signatures and a video recording of the proceedings of the meeting in the form of a DVD.
“The AIADMK is now functioning as one party with two groups having unified. Therefore, there can be no embargo now on the use of the ‘Two Leaves’ symbol. Since (late) Jayalalithaa has been recognised as the eternal general secretary and the post has been abolished by creating coordinator and joint coordinator, the question of VK Sasikala’s appointment as general secretary does not arise for consideration. By the resolutions passed unanimously at the GC meeting, the wish of the majority of the party has become clear,” the petition said.
