The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Friday protested at Delhi University’s North Campus against Rocky Tuseed of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) taking over as president of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU).
2014 case
The ABVP claimed that Mr. Tuseed was allowed to take charge of the DUSU office despite being served a notice by the Delhi High Court on charges of ‘attempt to murder’ in a case registered in 2014. ABVP’s presidential candidate for DUSU Rajat Chaudhary claimed that Mr. Tuseed had concealed facts, including his arrest for criminal charges, while filing his nomination for the post of the DUSU president.
A first information report (FIR) against Mr. Tuseed was registered in Rajouri Garden in August 2014 for attempt to commit culpable homicide, voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint at Shivaji College.
According to the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, any person convicted or under trial is not eligible to fight an election, the student organisation added.
Alleging that Mr. Tuseed had made a minor change in the way he spelt his name to take admission in M.A. in Buddhist Studies at DU in 2016, the ABVP demanded an investigation by the university.
Reacting to these allegations, the NSUI said the ABVP was trying to misuse the judiciary to subvert the democratic mandate given by the students of DU instead of taking the final result in its stride.
Case withdrawn
The NSUI added that the complainant in the case had during a hearing in September 2014 given an undertaking in court stating that he had withdrawn the case against Mr. Tuseed. Even after three years, the court has not framed any charges against him, the NSUI said. The Chief Election Officer for DUSU elections had notified Mr. Tuseed’s name subject to the outcome of a writ petition in the Delhi High Court.
