Ukraine’s Ambassador Igor Polikha’s mobile phone was snatched near Red Fort on Wednesday as he was clicking a picture of the monument. One person has been arrested in connection with the case, police said.
“Rajender Prasad, a 26-year-old resident of east Delhi’s Nand Nagri, was arrested late Friday from his house and the snatched phone was recovered from his possession,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Jatin Narwal.
However, the man who snatched the phone, is on the run. “The person who actually stole the phone has been identified and we are conducting raids to arrest him,” said Mr. Narwal.
The police said that the snatching incident occurred around 9.15 a.m.
Mr. Polikha was clicking photographs using his phone when an unidentified man snatched it and fled the spot, said the police.
“I was taking pictures when someone suddenly snatched my phone and ran away,” said the Ambassador.
Mr. Polikha was alone at the time of the incident as his driver was waiting for him quite a distance away. After his phone was snatched, the driver took the diplomat to the Kotwali police station where he filed a complaint and an FIR was registered.
‘Was not taking a selfie’
Rubbishing rumours on social media that he was taking a selfie, Mr. Polikha said: “I never take selfies, I only take pictures of the monuments and picturesque view. I had several pictures of Delhi and nearby areas in my phone”.
