Celebration to mark re-opening of Columbus Monument, Norristown

NORRISTOWN >> Elmwood Park Zoo, in partnership with J.P. Mascaro & Sons, invites the public to attend the 25th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Columbus Monument, Oct. 12 at Harding Boulevard and Sterigere Street in Norristown.

Keynote speaker for this year’s event will be former Norristown resident Phil Martelli, men’s basketball coach at St. Joseph’s University and former coach of Bishop Kenrick High School boys’ basketball team.

The celebration will begin at 11 a.m., and include the singing of the U.S. and Italian national anthems, along with the Pledge of Allegiance led by St. Francis of Assisi fourth-grade students. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department Color Guard will present colors.

Heading toward the 26th anniversary of the building of the monument, committee members want to celebrate the accomplishments of all Italians and Italian Americans at what has become a very special event at a very special monument.
