This week, non-profit organisation Bandhan-Konnagar showcased its livelihood security programme — Targeting the Hardcore Poor (THP). Designed to deliver to marginalised women, in 24 months it identifies, trains and mentors them in a micro-entrepreneurial skill so that they can attain financial independence.

Working in the States of Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Tripura, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana since 2006, THP provides the women with a livelihood asset such as poultry, handicrafts, vegetable/flower/fruit /fish vending, tea stall, sewing machine, grocery shop or ready-made garments. Using a 360-degree approach, the women are then linked to financial institutions.

Detailing the programme, Debasish Ray Choudhuri, Director-Livelihood, Bandhan-Konnagar, explained, “There is a strong desire among the women to transform their lives and that of their children, as most of them are highly vulnerable single mothers, dependent on meagre or insecure livelihoods.”
