NEW DELHI: The government is keen to allow urban housing projects in villages bordering towns and cities, housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said.

Sources said secretaries of housing and rural development ministries have held a round of talks to take the plan forward. Unregulated development in areas falling in the outskirts of city or town limits have created urban chaos across the country.

Haphazard development and construction are slowly making these zones unlivable and these could prove fatal in case of any natural disaster. All these years concepts such as 'lal dora' have been part of the governance system in cities like Delhi. Since urban regulations are not applicable in these land parcels, these are proving to be a disaster in urban areas.

There has also been an increasing trend of low-paid migrant workforce finding rented accommodation in nearby villages, which lack basic amenities. Puri also said his ministry will soon come out with model rental housing policy and rent control law to push availability of accommodation to huge share of migrant population in urban areas.
