There are indications that Xiaomi’s next flagship smartphone could feature wireless charging. The Chinese phone maker has officially joined the Wireless Power Consortium. The website of the consortium shows the company as one of the 243 members.

This is an indication that the company may soon come up with a phone with wireless charging to capture markets like India where its phones are much popular.

Though it remains to be seen if that model would be its much-anticipated Mi 7. The news is a delight anyway for the users who wish to own a phone carrying wireless charging technology but are not willing to go for high-end phones from Apple or Samsung. Xiaomi is famous for providing high-end technology at a cheaper price.

The consortium formed in 2008 has a mission to create and promote wide market adoption of the Qi wireless charging technology. Almost all major global smartphone makers including Nokia, Google, Samsung, LG and Apple are part of this consortium.

The consortium came into prominence in 2012 after Nokia and Google launched phones supporting inductive charging as per the Qi standard. Apple, which launched iPhone X with wireless charging feature last week was the last multi-billion company to join the consortium.
