Assurance given to increase security staff to prevent attacks

More than 200 doctors who struck work at Gandhi Hospital on Tuesday called off their protest on Thursday. The doctors protested demanding increased security and stepped-up electronic surveillance at the hospital.

After an attack on three junior doctors during the early hours of Wednesday, junior doctors went on protest by boycotting their duties, crippling patient care.

“We have asked for 50 more security personnel and were assured that 20 more staff would soon be deployed,” said P. Shravan, Gandhi Hospital Superintendent, who gave the assurance to the doctors that prompted them to call off the strike. He added that the process of setting up electronic cameras in the hospital will begin on Friday. The doctors demanded that security personnel be present mainly in areas of critical care. “We have instructed the security staff to control and disperse any mob within minutes to prevent attacks,” he said.

The Telangana Government Doctors Association and Junior Doctors Associations called off the strike on Thursday afternoon. They have also made other demands, including provision of clean drinking water at all locations in the hospital, which the hospital administration agreed.
