More than 83 percent of the candidates who appeared for Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET) did not make the cut according to the results released by Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) on Thursday, reported DNA.
Out of the 43,794 candidates who appeared for Paper I (class 1 to class 5) of TET only 7,038 — 16.36 percent — passed to qualify as teachers. In Paper II (class 6 to class 8), where 1,68,700 candidates applied, only 30,113 candidates, or 17.84 percent, passed.
BSEB chairman Anand Kishor, who declared the results, said that 11,351 answer sheets of examinees, were declared invalid for several reasons, including use of whitener, reported the Economic Times.
The results indicate that the pass percentage of women was poorer than that of men. The total percentage of women and men clearing the Bihar Teachers' Eligibility Test (BTET) stood at 11.93 percent and 21.85 percent respectively.
A similar pattern was recorded within the two categories — Paper I and Paper II. In paper I, 10.8 percent women and 19.53 percent were declared eligible while in paper II, 12.18 percent women and 22.51 percent qualified.
The test was conducted on July 23 at 348 exam centres across the state. The cutoff was 60 percent for general category, 55 percent for women and backward class I and II, and 50 percent for SC, ST and handicapped candidates.
The low pass percentage of over 17 percent in BTET represents another setback for the education system in Bihar, which had reported a relatively low overall pass percentage in the board examinations this year.
The overall pass percentage in the state has been declining over the past few years. In 2017, the pass percentage was over 51 percent for matriculation and 46 percent in Intermediate examinations, respectively this year, which was worse compared to 2016 results.
In 2016, the pass percentage was 75.15 percent with 25 percent failures, according to Examresults.net.
Earlier this year, the intermediate topper of the Bihar board, Ganesh Kumar, was suspended. Kumar later admitted to the police during interrogation that he fudged his age and also adopted unfair means during the examination.
