Alleged role of superiors being probed

Crime Investigation Department (CID) officials on Thursday inspected State Bank of India’s Gayathri Nagar branch following the ‘gold swindle’ involving a bank clerk and staff of a private gold loan company who were taken into custody on Wednesday.

Officials led by CID DSP L.K.V. Ranga Rao went through the documents related to lockers and gold loans in the bank and also questioned some employees.

According to officials, it was found that the prime accused Krishna Chaitanya, head clerk at the bank, managed to conceal the gold ornaments when they were put in the lockers on a regular basis.

Caught on the camera

Later, the clerk retrieved the ornaments and put them in his bag during lunch break, which was recorded by the security surveillance system in the bank, CID officials said. The ₹ 3 crore worth 10.5 kilogrammes of gold ornaments belong to as many as 58 customers.

Mr. Ranga Rao assured bank customers that their ornaments are safe.

The CID is also investigating the role of higher-ups in the branch as they reportedly believe it was not possible for the clerk alone to pull off the robbery on multiple occasions without getting noticed.
