The state police informed the High Court of Karnataka that six illegal slaughterhouses identified by an NGO were not unauthorised abattoirs.
Gau Gyan Foundation, the petitioner in a criminal case, had informed the court that there are 87 illegal slaughterhouses in the state of which 27 are in Bengaluru city alone.
Justice Aravind Kumar, hearing the petitioner, directed the NGO to identify these illegal locations where animals are slaughtered without proper licence. The judge also directed the state police to take measures to investigate the list of illegal slaughterhouses in the state.
The judge was hearing a petition filed by Kavitha Jain and Joshine Anthony who are executive members of Gau Gyan Foundation who have filed a criminal petition against Mohammed Ejaz Qureshi, president of Karnataka Beef Association and others.
The petitioners contended that a large number of cattle, including cows, calves, bulls, she buffaloes, oxen and camels, have been transported in the middle of the night and stocked up at the sides of the roads in an inhuman manner around Shivajinagar, Bharathinagar, K G Halli, D J Halli, Pulakeshinagar and Tannery Road. The judge adjourned the next hearing until October 4.
