Boy hit by cricket bat dies in hospital

Kin stage protest; demand dismissal of teacher

P. Visweswaran, 12, of Sithampoondi village in Namakkal district, who suffered a head injury after a cricket bat that slipped off his teacher’s hand in the school ground hit him, died at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital in the city on Wednesday morning.

Visweswaran, a class VII student of Government Higher Secondary School in Vittampalayam village in Tiruchengode block, was in the playground along with his friends when the cricket bat slipped off the hands of A. Kuppusamy, a teacher, and hit him at the back of his head. The bat had apparently broken, leaving just the handle in his hands. He was rushed to the GH here and admitted to the intensive care unit, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the relatives of the victim, including his parents, refused to receive the body and staged a road roko in front of the hospital demanding the arrest of the teacher, his dismissal from service and also filing of a case against him under the SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. They also demanded adequate compensation to the family of the boy.

Later, the Molasi police arrested Kuppusamy under Section 304 Part II IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). The police also booked him under the SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.
