Day of huge hauls in Bombay

more-in

It was a day of hauls by almost every preventive agency in Bombay to-day [Sept. 21]. The total value of the seizures is estimated at Rs. 12 lakhs. The biggest of them all was brought about by the Customs officials when they seized luxury goods worth Rs. 8 lakhs at Satpati port, about 120 miles from Bombay. The seizure was effected when the contrabands were clandestinely landed from a country craft and loaded into a motor truck. The news of Customs’ haul was followed by the information that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (A.C.B.) seized foreign currency worth more than Rs. 62,000 from a Hungarian national and a woman. The A.C.B., in a collaboration with the Enforcement Directorate, raided a fashionable flat in the city occupied by the woman, whose nationality was not established and recovered the foreign currencies including dollars, pounds, travellers’ cheques and currency notes.
