Centre’s stand on Cauvery driven by Karnataka polls: Stalin

more-in

DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Wednesday accused the Centre of arguing against the final award of the Cauvery Water Tribunal in the Supreme Court with an eye on the Assembly polls in Karnataka.

“It is really shocking. Instead of constituting the Cauvery Management Board, the Centre delayed it for political reasons. Now, Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar has argued that the final award is subject to review. This is a cause for concern,” Mr. Stalin said in a statement.

The DMK leader alleged that the Centre had plans to change the order of the Tribunal in favour of Karnataka and had pleaded accordingly. “Its move is motivated by the elections to the Karnataka Assembly,” he said.

Pointing out that the failure to create the Cauvery Management Board had resulted in the Cauvery Delta region in Tamil Nadu losing crop after crop, Mr. Stalin said the Supreme Court had condemned the Centre for not constituting the board.

He said at a time when farmers were committing suicide due to crop failure, the Centre’s stand on the issue was unpardonable.
