‘The boy did not own a smartphone’

A class XI student, who claimed to be playing the Blue Whale Challenge and had drawn the shape of a whale on his left arm using a blade, was rescued by his school authorities on Wednesday. However, the police said they will conduct an inquiry with the boy on Thursday to verify his claim to confirm if he was playing the challenge.

A student of a government-aided school in Vaniyambadi, the boy said he had reached the 39th task of the challenge. But a police official said he did not own a smartphone and said he played the game along with a college student.

“He said that he played the game with a college student for two hours from 4.30 p.m. everyday. They used to go and play near a riverbed. The boy said he used to return home after playing for two hours,” the official said.

He added that the boy was not providing clear answers on what tasks he had done so far. Considering the previous cases of persons rescued from the challenge, the official noted that it involved tasks assigned during early morning hours.

“We have to conduct a thorough inquiry to confirm that he was indeed playing the game,” he said.
