Victim admitted to ICU with serious head injuries

A final year student of MBBS programme at the Government Medical College, Kalamassery, was on Tuesday attacked with a cricket bat by her classmate, whose proposal she had turned down earlier.

The incident took place at 3 p.m. when the accused, Manas, 21, a final-year-student, walked out of the classroom and returned with a cricket bat before unleashing the attack even as the class was progressing.

The 21-year old victim, who sustained serious head injuries, was rushed to the intensive care unit of the hospital on the campus.

The police said that the accused had been in a relationship with the girl and they had broken up a couple of months ago. The boy had taken a break from his studies for two months before joining the campus on Tuesday. The college authorities said that a suture had to be done on the victim’s head and she was under observation.

The accused, a native of Chandiroor in Alappuzha, was taken into custody by the Kalamassery police. The officials are yet to record the victim’s statement as she is still in the ICU.
