The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday demanded immediate arrests of BJP councillor from Chhattarpur Anita Tanwar and her husband Ranbir Tanwar, and strict action against her for allegedly assaulting and threatening a sanitation worker of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
‘Attack pre-planned’
Addressing the media, senior AAP leader Atishi Marlena claimed the assault was pre-planned as the victim was called into Ms. Tanwar’s office, where he was assaulted and abused, and his clothes were torn. Ms. Marlena added that caste-based abuses were also hurled at the worker.
“It was not an impulsive attack because the worker did not meet the Councillor on the road. He was called into her office and beaten up. He was then shooed away from the office. No person should be put through such humiliation, especially a sanitation worker who is working day and night to keep Delhi clean,” she said.
Timely intervention
Stating that the BJP had tried its level best to sweep the matter under the rug, Ms. Marlena said an FIR was registered on Saturday only due to timely intervention by AAP’s Leader of Opposition Ramesh Matiala.
“Even after an FIR was registered, no action has been taken against the accused so far. If such a case had been registered against an AAP leader, that person would have been behind bars already,” she said, adding that the incident showed how the Delhi Police was being used to protect BJP leaders and to bury the case.
Najafgarh case
Mr. Matiala said a similar case of assault of an official of the Horticulture Department was reported from Najafgarh constituency’s Isapur ward, where the councillor and zone deputy chairperson Suman Dagar was allegedly involved.
“The BJP leaders are so drunk with power that they have forgotten the basic rule of humanity. But they forget that the people of Delhi will not tolerate such an attitude and will bring them down soon,” he added.
