A total of 2,259 farmers in the district, who were raising different agriculture crops during the ongoing kharif season have now opted for crop insurance cover under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
Of them 2,199 have not taken any loan.
“It is heartening that such a large number of farmers who have not opted for crop loans have voluntarily come forward to take up insurance cover. For farmers obtaining loans, insurance cover is mandatory,” said Joint Director of Agriculture Mohamed Iqbal.
The speedy settlement of insurance claims during the rabi season might be the reason for farmers opting for insurance cover, he said. Insurance cover was offered during the rabi season for the first time in the district.
The insurance claims of 1,018 paddy farmers in the district have been settled.
Among them, 24 farmers received the amount directly through the insurance company.
The others received the claim amounts deposited into their bank accounts.
