Officials inspect implementation of cleanliness campaign

As part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (Cleanliness is Service) campaign, conservancy workers cleared garbage from 47 government hospitals, maternity homes, primary health centres and pharmacies on Monday.

Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao and Corporation Commissioner S. Aneesh Sekhar visited the Sellur PHC and took part in the exercise. The number of fever cases had risen from 70 to 90 in a span of one month, said Dr. Bhuvaneshwari at the PHC. Mosquito larvae thrived in stagnant water, she said.

Residents also complained about drains getting clogged, leading to stagnation of rainwater mixed with drainage. M. Velmurugan, a temple priest, said garbage was cleared from streets only when officials visited the area.

The Corporation Commissioner said that the process of cleaning Kiruthumal Nadhi had started in different parts of the city, including the Ellis Nagar stretch where plastic wasted choked the waterbody.

On Tuesday, the campaign will continue in vegetable markets with focus on cleanliness.
