Respite from heat as sharp showers lash city

more-in

Bringing respite from the humid weather, sharp showers lashed many parts of the city on Monday evening.

According to officials of the Meteorological Department, there were no weather systems like a low pressure and the sudden showers were caused due to convective activity that usually follows an intense period of heat during the day.

Several areas such as Anna Nagar, Ayanavaram, Nungambakkam, Ashok Nagar, R.A. Puram and Arumbakkam recieved rain that lasted for over an hour.

However, between 8 p.m and 9 p.m, the city received less than 1 cm of rainfall.

Traffic was slow on arterial roads like Poonamalee High Road due to water logging.

The cloud cover extended for a radius of 100 kms covering up to Sriharikota on one end and Kancheepuram on the other.

Such spells during South West Monsoon do not last more than few hours.

Officials said over the next two days light rain is likely to occur in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperature is likely to be around 34 and 26 degrees Celsius.
