England clinched a 7-wicket win over West Indies in Manchester to go 1-0 up in five-match series. Riding on an emphatic knock from Jonny Bairstow, England won the first ODI. Bairstow went on to score his maiden ODI hundred. The hosts lost Alex Hales early in the chase but a partnership of over 100 runs between Joe Root and Bairstow provided the base for the chase. Root too scored a half-century before getting out to Williams. Left-handed batsman Ben Stokes smashed a maximum to conclude the proceedings for his side.Earlier, England restricted West Indies to 204/9 in 42 overs in a rain-affected match after Ben Stokes scalping a three-for. West Indies after winning the toss elected to bat first and Chris Gayle who was making a return to ODI side after more than 2 years gave them an aggressive start. But soon, England bowlers got the first breakthrough in the form of Evin Lewis when the team score read 45. West Indies then lost Gayle but Marlon Samuels and Shai Hope provided them with resistance. The two compiled a partnership of over 50 runs before Ben Stokes removed both Hope and Samuels. West Indies were eventually reduced to 187/8. Captain Jason Holder did score some runs in the last over to guide his side to a total of 204/9 in 42 overs. He remained unbeaten at 41.
