An 18-year-old Dalit gang-rape victim committed suicide in Jind after being repeatedly harassed by the accused, the police said on Tuesday.

The girl, a resident of Palwan village in Uchana town, consumed toilet cleaner on Saturday, following which she was admitted to a local hospital that pronounced her dead on Monday night.

The girl’s father alleged she was raped by three youths of the village a month ago when she was going to a local temple. The family did not register a complaint with police fearing social stigma. The girl’s father, however, complained to the families of the accused and warned them of staying away from their daughter.

However, he said, the accused continued to harass and taunt his daughter when she would go out.

Police said the accused allegedly threw a letter inside the victim’s house in which they tried to shame her by making some vulgar remarks at her. This upset the victim, who committed suicide.

Jind SP Arun Singh said they have arrested the three accused —Rahul, Praveen and Kuldeep. Charges under relevant sections of the IPC and SC, ST (prevention of atrocities) Act have been slapped against them, said the SP.

They were produced in a local court that sent them to three-day police remand. The SP said they were trying to match the handwriting of the accused with that on the letter thrown into victim’s house.
