Information kiosks in Haryana jails to function from Oct 2

Inmates in jails will soon be able to collect information about themselves, such as their time left in prison, through a new biometric system.

The plans to set up an 'Information Kiosk' in jails, DG (Jails), Haryana, K P Singh, said today.


The kiosks are set to begin functioning from October 2.

Singh said all jails in the state have been digitised. Medical and other records related to prisoners have been computerised. Even custody certificate is now sent to the through computer only, he told reporters in Panchkula.

"All information related to prisoners in jails would be available on the 'Information Kiosk'. It would contain such details as the date when a prisoner came to jail, the possible date of release, and time of parole taken by him. Any prisoner can view information about him through biometric on the computer screen and can take a print-out by paying only Rs two," he added.

The official said that all jails in have become cashless under a programme.

"Prisoners are not allowed to keep cash with them. Earlier, members of the families of prisoners who used to come to visit them in jail would hand over cash to them. Many complaints were received about this system which has been stopped. Now, the relatives can deposit money in the prisoner's account," he said.

He also pointed out that jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's lawyer, who met him recently, had got an amount of Rs 5,000 deposited into his biometric account.
