Karti Chidambaram, the son of former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, on Monday complained that his fundamental rights as a citizen are under attack.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Karti in his challenge against a look out circular issued by the government in connection witth the INX Media FIPB clearance, said every time the CBI comes out with claims of new properties abroad and new reports in covers.
Mr. Sibal made a strong objection when the case listed before a Bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra on Monday was not heard at the scheduled hour of 2 p.m. When it finally came up after over two hours, the Bench asked Mr. Sibal whether it could be re-scheduled.
At this point, Mr. Sibal conveyed the urgency of the issue and pressed strongly for an early hearing and disposal of the case. The case is finally scheduled for September 22.
Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was representing CBI and said he could explain the case against Karti if provided an opportunity.
Mr. Sibal had earlier also complained about the CBI levelling allegations of undisclosed properties and assets against his client without filing an FIR.
Karti had filed an affidavit in court saying both his family and he were “deeply hurt” by the allegations. He even said that if the investigative agencies could find any undisclosed assets, they were prepared to hand over them to the government. Karti said he and his family have been income tax assessees for years.
