A joyride turned fatal for a teenager who was speeding in his car on Hosur Road Elevated Expressway, as he lost control of the wheels, rammed into the parapet of the flyover and crashed into the barricades erected at the end of the road at Roopena Agrahara in the early hours of Sunday.
The 17-year-old, who was driving his parents’ car, died immediately, the police said. He was driving at around 150 kmph while two of his friends were driving two other cars also at high speed, according to the police.
The three — all first PU students and residents of HSR Layout — were returning from Electronics City and were racing. According to the police, the trio had driven multiple times between Silk Board junction and Electronics City before the accident occurred around 3 a.m. Within seconds of losing control over the vehicle, the first car hit the second car tailing it.
The impact was such that the driver of the second car lost control and the vehicle jumped the median and hit a milk van coming from the opposite direction. The driver of the second car escaped with minor injuries. The third car also hit the median but the driver managed to hold on to the wheel for sometime before bringing it to a halt.
The police said the father of victim is a businessman. “The fathers of the other two boys are senior IT professionals working for companies located on the Outer Ring Road,” a police officer said.
The milk van driver disappeared from the scene after his vehicle toppled. He is believed to be unhurt, the officer said.
Fathers of the boys arrested
The fathers of the three boys involved in the crash at Roopena Agrahara were arrested on Sunday. “We cannot divulge
details of the accused since they are minors. However, we have arrested their fathers on the charge of death due to negligence and also under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act,” Additional Commissioner of Police R. Hithendra said. He said they had seized their driving licences and sent them to the RTO with a recommendation to suspend them. “This should be an eye-opener for everyone,” he added.
