With the deadline for removing encroachments on arterial roads ended on September 16, the corporation along with highways department and the police removed encroachments here on Monday.
The district police have asked the shopkeepers to remove encroachments by themselves on Perundurai Road, Brough Road and E.V.N. Road where work is in progress for the construction of the flyover at ₹ 58.54 crore. Since barricades were erected in the middle of the arterial roads, vehicle movement in the available space was found difficult in these roads.
The police gave 5 p.m. as deadline for removing the encroachments by the shopkeepers failing which encroachments would be removed by the departments and the expenses incurred towards removing the encroachments will be obtained from the land owners.
On Monday, officials removed shops that were established on the roadsides and also removed the advertisement materials. They said that the expense incurred for eviction will be obtained from the land owners concerned who had encroached the road space. They said that the drive would continue in the coming days and warned of severe action if they again occupy the space.
