Exhibition of works by children of Sukritham Girls’ Home

At the Gudhaam Art Café on Gujarati Street in Kozhikode were princesses in myriad hues and forms. Some had long hair, some had crowns on their heads; some were dressed in gowns, and some in pillowcase dresses. But, they all had about them a touch of childlike innocence.

The paintings, part of the ‘Princess’ series, were a major attraction at ‘Sprouting Marvels’, an exhibition of paintings by the children of Sukritham Girls’ Home. The frames reflected the concept of princess the little girls had in their minds.

Training session

The 22 children, who are residents of the Home, have contributed to the exhibition that comprises around 50 paintings of various sizes. The exhibition is an outcome of a short training session the girls had undergone under Weera Kulppi, a Finland national, who has been volunteering at the Home for the past four months.

“Not all of them are artists, while some have natural talent. However, all of them have been given a platform to exhibit their talent,” said Mahadev Prasad, who has been running the Home for the past 10 years to empower girls from lesser privileged families.

“I found myself repeatedly amazed at the talent that began sprouting from beneath the fear of failure,” said Ms. Kulppi, adding that the project had awoken in the girls a boundless world of imagination besides bring them joy and creativity.

The exhibition, opened by artist Madanan on Saturday, will conclude on Sunday.
