Medicos demand more facilities

Warn of agitation if govt fails to take heed of their demands within a week

Students of Government Medical College, Manjeri, took out a march to the Collectorate here on Friday demanding proper facilities for them. Foremost among the demands was setting up of hostel facilities.

Students under the banner of the Students Federation of India (SFI) warned of launching a strike if the government did not heed their demands within a week.

They said hostel facility available for them was temporary and permanent hostel buildings should be constructed soon.

Another demand

They also demanded that the medical college be brought under the exclusive governance of the Directorate of Medical Education. At present, the Directorate of Medical Education and the Directorate of Health Services are governing the medical college.

The students demanded immediate handing over of the academic block, which was nearing completion. They also demanded appointment of a Principal, and construction of an auditorium and living quarters for staff and residents.

SFI district secretary P. Shabeer inaugurated the march. SFI medical college unit president M. Bipin presided. Secretary Ahijit V. welcomed the gathering. College union chairman K. Mubashir and SFI district president N.M. Shafeek spoke.
