Deadline over: Madarsas that haven’t furnished details face action in Uttar Pradesh

The UP Board of Madarsa Education is planning action against madarsas that have failed to meet the Friday deadline to furnish their details.

According to officials of the board, institutions that have failed to furnish details on the board’s website now face action, including cancellation of their recognition.

UP has around 14,000 madarsas, of which nearly 6,000 have so far furnished details on the board’s website.

With an aim to bring transparency in the working of madarsas, the Yogi government had instructed these institutions to upload pictures of the classrooms or the total area, number of teachers, their Aadhaar numbers, account details of the madarsas etc on the Board’s website by September 15.

“The deadline expired on Friday and the government has not extended it,” said Rahul Gupta, registrar, UP Board of Madarsa Education.

“From Saturday, we will start the process of identifying madarsas that have not furnished details, as directed by the state government,” said Gupta.

“As the deadline expired on Friday, it will take some time to identify madarsas that have not provided details,” added Gupta.

It may be pointed out that the state government had already withheld aid of 46 madarsas after they failed to meet set norms. The government took the decision after it found that these madarsas lacked even basic facilities.

Uttar Pradesh has around 560 aided madarsas – the minority educational institutions that offer studies in Islamic theology and religious laws. On an average, every aided madarsa has around 17 teachers and the government gives around Rs 4 to 5 lakh aid to each institution.
