Strike ends; protests continue

Even as the teachers and the government employees under the banner ‘JACTTO-GEO’ withdrew their indefinite strike on the Madras High Court orders, the Salem City Police removed and arrested 615 striking employees, including 195 women, in front of the collectorate on Friday.

All of them were later released in the evening.

The striking JACTTO-GEO members were asked by the police to vacate the District Panchayat office campus near the Collectorate where they were continuing sit-in strike for the past two days late Thursday evening. Following this, they dispersed.

They gathered in front of the District Panchayat office on Friday morning, but the police locked the gates and prevented their entry. Enraged by this, the teachers and government employees staged demonstration and later squatted on the road affecting the flow of traffic.

The police removed them and arrested 615 persons, including 195 women. All of them were later released in the evening.

Namakkal

The police rounded up 700 striking teachers and government employees, including about 300 women, when they staged demonstration in front of the collectorate in the town on Friday. Earlier the police denied permission to them to enter the collectorate campus, where they were holding sit-in agitation for the past two days.

All of them were later released in the evening, police said.
