Dubai woman seeks help for underweight foetus

Mumbai: A 24-week pregnant woman from Dubai, who came to Mumbai to seek medical help for complications in her unborn baby, may have to continue the pregnancy despite severe foetal anomaly.

The weight of the foetus has reduced to merely 330 grams due to an autoimmune blood disorder. Since the Medical Termination of Pregnancy law allows termination only up to 20 weeks, the woman, an NRI, will have to wait till the unborn baby succumbs in her womb. “We have no choice but to wait for foetal demise. This is really unfair on the mother,” said gynaecologist Dr. Nikhil Datar who is treating her. In Dubai, termination is permitted only up to 17 weeks if there is danger to the mother’s life or presence of foetal anomaly.
