‘Make rules a requirement for grants, recognition of schools’

Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal wrote to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday asking the Delhi government to ensure that the security measures identified by the police are made part of the binding requirements for grants and continuation of recognition of schools.

‘Waive verification fee’

The L-G also directed the Delhi Police to waive verification charges for private schools, and said that all departments must work together to ensure a safe and secure environment for school children.

Taking cognisance of what he termed were “unfortunate incidents of sexual assault” in schools in the national capital region, Mr. Baijal wrote to Mr. Sisodia emphasising the need to urgently formulate and enforce guidelines to ensure the safety of students.

Safety and security

Earlier, the L-G had directed the Delhi Police to visit schools and advise them to implement safety and security measures.

He had also asked the police to suggest measures that should be implemented by the schools.

“The Delhi Police suggested important measures such as verification of security guards, support staff and employees; employment of adequate number of security guards, preferably from ex-servicemen or authorised private security agencies registered under the Private Security Agencies Regulation Act; security and safety audit of schools; installation of CCTV cameras at suitable points; and proper illumination of dark spots,” the Raj Niwas said in a statement.

According to the L-G’s office, Mr. Baijal suggested to Mr. Sisodia that the measures listed by the police and other stakeholders be made part of the binding requirements for grant and continuation of recognition of schools under the Delhi School Education Act and Rules.
