18 killed as overloaden boat capsizes in River Yamuna

Twenty five people have been rescued safely. Sixteen rescued people have been sent to nearby hospitals.

Eighteen people have reportedly died after a boat which was carrying about 60 people capsized in Yamuna in Katha village of Baghpat district early Thursday morning.

So far dead bodies of 18 people have been taken out from Yamuna. Twenty five people have been rescued safely. Sixteen rescued people have been sent to nearby hospitals.

According to local villagers the victims were mostly daily wage labourers who boarded the boat from Katha village and were going to Sonipat in Haryana looking for work.

Immediately after the boat capsized at about 8 a.m., the local villagers angry with the delayed response of the local administration blocked Delhi-Saharanpur highway and vandalised the vehicles on the highway. After the mob fury police and senior administrative officials rushed to the spot. Rescue operations are currently underway with a team of NDRF on the spot.
