37 of 100 cases that came up at adalat settled

The Kerala State Women’s Commission on Wednesday intervened in a case in which a plot of land against which a loan of ₹4 lakh was taken was sold for ₹17.5 lakh by manipulating land documents.

The case came up at a mega adalat conducted by the commission at its headquarters here on Wednesday.

The property in question was transferred in the name of a person whom the loanee did not even know. Those who paid up claimed that they had paid ₹17.5 lakh, and that it was the complainant’s son who received the money.

The commission decided to hear the complainant’s son, before taking steps to cancel the deed as the property was sold without the owner’s knowledge.

In another case, a woman complained that her husband, a policeman hailing from Malabar, had abandoned her after 10 years of marriage. He had taken their young children home for vacation but had admitted them to a school there. He had refused to allow them to meet her. The policeman sought 10 days to decide if he wanted to get back with her. The woman was shifted to the short-stay home of the commission. As many as 100 cases came up before the commission, of which 37 were settled. Four cases were sent for counselling, and reports sought from various departments in six cases. Fifty-three cases were posted for the next adalat.

Commission member M.S. Thara and director V.U. Kuriakose led the adalat. The adalat will continue on Thursday at the Rest House, Thycaud. Commission chairperson M.C. Josephine will lead the adalat.
