The Cabinet has scrapped an earlier decision to collect tax from the POABS Group that possesses the Karuna estate at Nelliyampathy in Palakkad.
The decision to collect tax for the 800-acre estate was taken by the previous United Democratic Front government. The Cabinet on Wednesday took the decision in the wake of the ownership dispute on the estate pending before the High Court. The UDF government in March 2016 had decided to collect tax with effect from January 1 to April 30, 2016.
The Left Democratic Front government had formed a Cabinet subcommittee to review controversial decisions taken at the fag end of the previous government’s tenure and it recommended against collecting tax before settling the dispute. The latest decision was made in line with the subcommittee recommendation.
Tennis club issue
The meeting directed the Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) to place recommendations for collecting the lease rent arrears from the Trivandrum Tennis Club that possesses 4.27 acres of land. The previous government had decided to renew the lease pact after collecting 0.2% of the lease arrears. The latest decision is part of the bid to review the previous one.
As many as 138 posts would be created in the engineering wing of the newly constituted municipalities and the Kannur Corporation. The posts have been created on condition that additional funds would not be allocated for them. As many as 162 new posts would be created for the new ESI dispensaries to be opened soon.
